Narrow loss on points count back... 14 games all 6-6
Sussex V Hants (home) 22 November 2009 This fixture was always going to be a tough one but we were pleasantly surprised when we saw their line up was a lot weaker than we’d played previously. Richard and Dave teamed up together (after finally arriving with food which was a bonus) and continued their success taking 2 mens out of 2 fairly comfortably. Colin Hayhurst very kindly stepped into the breach at the last minute to cover for an unwell Nick and he and Mark were unlucky not to pick up one of their men’s. Unfortunately Mel and Julie were unable to secure a ladies doubles but had close games. Cathy and Sara, however, continued their winning streak and were able to take both ladies albeit one of them in a very costly 3 ender. Match tied at 4 all after the doubles. Dave and Cathy, Sara and Richard playing at 1 and 2 respectively took their mixed giving Sussex the magic 6 matches. Either one more mixed to win the match or hope for a result on count back. Julie and Colin, Mel and Mark weren’t able to convert their games into wins so match finished at 6-6. Count back on games and still the match tied at 14 games all. Next the count up of points and calculator at the ready.. Once again we were glad that Colin was around as he took the mathematics into his stride and did the sums although couldn’t find us an extra 12 points so frustratingly we ended up the runners up… Very close match and very disappointing not to have won given the closeness of the scores but all to play for away on 13th December.
