First win of the season for over 40's!!!
Sussex 40’s v Kent Return match against Kent with hopes high having had inside information that Kent’s no 1 man wasn’t playing. Majority of the team were there for the 2pm start. Dave and Richard must have thought it was a 2.30 start!!!!!!!! Anyway match kicked off with ladies doubles for a change, Cathy, Sara, Jo and Julie, and within a short time we were 2-0 up. Nick and Paul had a close 3 setter against the number one pair but couldn’t convert to a win. Richard and Dave had convincing win against the number 2 pair. 3-1 after doubles first round. Expectations high for 2nd round of doubles …. Both ladies winning their return doubles taking match to 5-1. Mens doubles went on and we only picked up Dave and Richard’s match against the number one pair in a close 3 setter. Match score 6-2 going into the mixed. The plan so far was working. Paul and Julie playing mixed at number 1 went 11-2 up however their opponents fought back well and snatched the victory in two ends. Whilst Dave and Andrea battled it out at one end Richard and Sara were doing the same at the other. Richard and Sara were point for point all the way through in both games until about 15 when they managed up the tempo a bit and finally won in 2 ends giving team the valuable 7th rubber. Dave and Andrea were inched out 18 and 16 at number 2. Nick and Jo, newly formed pair, battled well against the number 4 pair but were edged out in 3. The final score was 7-5 to Sussex and our first win this season. Well played everyone and thanks to Richard for finally turning up. We appreciate it!
