Sussex Vets Versus Surrey Sunday 25th October Always a good venue to play at and the Surrey vets are always extremely hospitable. On the face of it when we saw the ladies knocking up we were fairly sure of taking at least 3 if not 4 ladies doubles. The ladies pairs of Cathy and Sara, Andrea and Mel saw off their opposition fairly convincingly and ensured a clean sweep of ladies doubles. The Surrey men proved to be too strong for the men’s pairings of Paul and Nick, Andrew and Richard. Although some tenacious play by Richie Murray in his second match nearly clinched one of the men’s doubles but they were just eased out towards the end. 4-4 at the end of the doubles and all to play for in the mixed. Another set of newly formed mixed pairs took to the court. Nick and Mel had an upward battle at number one mixed, Rich and Andrea faired better at number 2 but again were edged out. Paul and Sara had a good match at number 3 and took it in 2 close games. It all hinged on the final match for us to snatch a draw and a much needed point. Andrew and Cathy put up a brave fight but unfortunately lost out in 3 close games. A really good effort all around but ended in 7-5 loss which could easily have been reversed in our favour. All to play for against Kent on Sunday 8th November.
